If your child makes a mistake when saying a word, we need to make them aware that they have said a word wrong … but it can be a bit overwhelming if we’re constantly telling them they’ve made a mistake. Instead, repeat the sound/word/sentence correctly so that your child hears good examples of speech and language. This is known as ‘modelling’.
Modelling has three different strategies we can try …
1. We can use modelling to repeat the targeted sound/word…
Child: ‘gog’ Adult: ‘dog’
2. We can also use modelling to emphasise the sound….
Adult: ‘A dog? Dog starts with your ‘d’ sound!’
3. Or even try to expand what they’ve said….
Adult: ‘You’ve got a dog at home.’
