Here are some ideas to help children develop their vocabularies and learn the meanings of new words. These activities are best carried out on a regular basis!

  • Ask your child to sort pictures of items from 2 different categories, or within the same category and ask them to provide ‘labels‘. Eg, ‘put all the wild animals in one group, and all the animals which are pets in another’. Or you could group animals that would live in ‘hot‘ or ‘cold‘ countries, or you could sort items in to what they are made of, such as ‘wood‘, ‘plastic‘, ‘metal‘ or ‘material‘, etc.

  • You can provide the ‘label’ or category if your child is not able to name the item. This task is also a good opportunity to introduce new vocabulary!
